Editorial standards

This is a site about numbers, so the numbers have to be right.

Sourcing

Every price, date and record on this site comes from a public source: auction house results, court filings, company reports and statements, and established news outlets. Each article lists its sources at the end, with links. When the primary record is unavailable, we say which reporting we relied on.

Facts, estimates and explanations

We keep three things apart. A reported fact is a figure or event a source states. An estimate is a figure a source gives as approximate. An explanation is our reading of why a price happened. Explanations are written as such ("collectors tend to…", "that is likely why…") and never presented as reported fact.

Prices are history, not advice

A sale price records what one buyer paid on one day. Nothing on this site is an appraisal, an offer or investment advice, and past prices say nothing certain about future ones.

Independence

We don't accept payment to cover, value or promote an item, and we have no stake in the items we write about. If that ever changes for a specific article, the article will say so at the top.

Corrections

If we get something wrong, we fix it and note the correction at the end of the article. Send corrections to hello@expensiveexplained.com with a link to the page and, if possible, a source.
